Craft 4 stopped getting security fixes on April 30, 2026.

Your site still runs. It just doesn't get patched anymore. Here's what that means, what changes when you move to Craft 5, and how we'd run the upgrade for you.

01 / The plain fact

Every Craft 4 site is now past end of life.

Craft 4 active support ended on April 30, 2025. Security support ended a year later, on April 30, 2026. Since then the Craft team doesn't ship Craft 4 fixes of any kind.

Craft 5 is supported through 2031, and it's the version every Craft 4 site should be on now.

Every Craft version's dates
02

Nothing breaks on the deadline. The risk just keeps growing.

An end-of-life site looks fine from the outside. Underneath, three things start drifting.

E.01

No more security patches

When the next Craft security advisory goes out, there won't be a Craft 4 fix. Advisories are public, so the people scanning for vulnerable sites read them the same day you do.

E.02

PHP keeps moving without you

Hosts retire old PHP versions on their own schedule. Every PHP release Craft 4 was never built for narrows your hosting options, until your host makes the call for you.

E.03

Plugins drop Craft 4

Plugin developers spend their time on Craft 5. Fixes for the Craft 4 versions of your form, SEO, and search plugins slow down and then stop.

The good news: Craft 4 to 5 is a well-documented upgrade, and it's smaller now than it will be after another year of plugin drift.

03

What changes in a Craft 4 to 5 upgrade.

These six items are where the time goes. Every site has a different mix, which is why the audit comes first.

Before any of it, the site has to be on the latest Craft 4 release with no deprecation warnings. That's Craft's own advice, and it's where we start.

Entrification

Categories, tags and globals can become entries.

Craft 5 treats almost everything as an entry. Categories, tags, and global sets can be converted to entries with Craft's built-in entrify commands. It's optional, and it simplifies your content model, but it changes how templates find that content. We decide with you whether to convert during the upgrade or leave it for later.

Matrix

Blocks become nested entries; templates that query blocks need updating.

Matrix blocks are no longer their own element type. They become nested entries, and block types become entry types. The upgrade converts the data for you. Templates and custom code that queried blocks directly have to be updated, and that is where most of the template work in a 4 to 5 upgrade lives.

Super Table and Neo

Super Table migrates to Matrix; Neo needs a decision.

Craft 5's Matrix can nest, so Super Table's main job goes away. Verbb ships a migration that converts Super Table fields to Matrix (php craft super-table/migrate). Neo fields need their own decision based on how your content is structured.

Redactor to CKEditor

Rich text moves to CKEditor with Craft's converter.

Redactor isn't really going forward on Craft 5. The official CKEditor plugin includes a converter (php craft ckeditor/convert/redactor) that moves your rich text fields across. Custom Redactor configs and toolbar plugins get rebuilt in CKEditor by hand.

PHP and database requirements

Craft 5 needs PHP 8.2+ and MySQL 8.0.17+.

Craft 5 needs PHP 8.2 or later, and MySQL 8.0.17+, MariaDB 10.4.6+, or PostgreSQL 13+. The latest Craft 4 release runs on the same stack, so the server can be upgraded first, separately, before Craft itself moves.

Plugin compatibility

Every plugin needs a Craft 5 release, a replacement, or removal.

Every plugin needs a Craft 5 release. Most well-maintained ones have one. The rest get replaced, rewritten as a small custom module, or removed if nobody actually uses them anymore.

04

How we run a Craft 4 to 5 upgrade.

  1. Audit

    Find out what you have.

Versions, the Craft 5 status of every plugin, PHP, hosting, custom modules, and Matrix templates. Then a written plan and quote.

  2. Staging upgrade

Do the work on a copy, never on your live site.

On staging: latest Craft 4 first, then Craft 5, plugin swaps, and the Matrix, Super Table, and Redactor conversions.

  3. Content checks

Check it the way your team uses it.

We check templates and entries page by page, test forms, search, and integrations, and train your editors before launch.

  4. Launch

A planned cutover with a way back.

A fresh backup, a scheduled launch window, and a written rollback plan. Redirects, caching, and monitoring get checked that day.

  5. Care plan

So you don't end up here again.

On a care plan, updates go on as they ship, so the next major version is routine.

05

What a typical Craft 4 to 5 upgrade takes.

Two things move the numbers most: how many plugins need replacing instead of updating, and how much custom code touches Matrix. The audit turns these ranges into a timeline and a quote for your site.

Typical timeline
2–4 weeksFor a straightforward site, from audit sign-off to launch.

07 / Plan for Craft 6 at the same time

Craft 5 is the first half of your Craft 6 move.

Craft 6 is being rebuilt on Laravel. It's in alpha now, and craftcms.com is targeting general availability in Q4 2026.

Craft's own upgrade guide says the smoothest path to Craft 6 starts from the latest Craft 5. So an upgrade to Craft 5 now isn't throwaway work. While we're in your code, we flag the custom modules and plugins that will need attention for Craft 6, so you know what's coming.

08 / FAQ

Craft 4 end-of-life questions

Will my Craft 4 site stop working?

No. It keeps running exactly as it did on April 30, 2026. What stopped is the fixes. Any vulnerability found in Craft 4 from now on stays open on your site.

Can I skip Craft 5 and wait for Craft 6?

Not a good bet. Craft 6 is in alpha, and craftcms.com is targeting general availability in Q4 2026. Its upgrade guide says the smoothest path to Craft 6 starts from the latest Craft 5. Waiting means running unpatched software in the meantime and still doing the Craft 5 step later.

Do we need a redesign to upgrade?

No. Your design, templates, and content come across. The work is under the hood: plugins, PHP, Matrix, and rich text. If you want a redesign, that's a separate decision, and it's easier to make on a site that's already current.

What will our editors notice?

The control panel looks a little different. Matrix content shows up as nested entries, and if you used Redactor, rich text fields switch to CKEditor. We walk your team through anything that moved before launch.

Can you upgrade a site you didn't build?

Yes. The audit is how we get to know a site someone else built, and it happens before any upgrade work starts. If the site needs more than an upgrade, the audit says so.

How long does a Craft 4 to 5 upgrade take, and what does it cost?

It mostly depends on how many plugins need replacing rather than updating, and how much custom code touches Matrix. The audit gives you a timeline and a quote for your site before you commit to the upgrade.
